Fetal Medicine / Fetology

What is Fetal Medicine / Fetology?

Fetal medicine, also called prenatal pediatrics or fetology, is a well-established and highly sophisticated area of medicine practiced for more than 20 years. It is more than just fetal surgery and reflects the broad spectrum of conditions potentially treatable before birth.

Fetal medicine surgery improve outcomes in high-risk pregnancy.Fetal medicine deals strictly with high-risk pregnancies in which there is a known or suspected genetic or serious structural abnormality (congenital defect) that requires medical or surgical attention during the pregnancy or shortly after birth.

Fetal medicine is the logical extension of pediatric care to the unborn patient and is bringing hope to families facing fetal abnormalities and high-risk pregnancies. New technologies, advanced diagnostic testing and ever-evolving medical expertise make a fetal diagnosis possible as early as 12 weeks gestation.

Early and accurate diagnosis of a fetal abnormality lets physicians and parents knowledgeably choose the best option for treatment. The earlier problems of the fetus are treated, the greater the potential for improvement of the child's health for the long term. Today, abnormalities once considered life-threatening or only treatable after birth are being treated in utero (in the womb) with successful results.

Thanks to ongoing research by the experts at the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati, including programs sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the field of fetal medicine continues to grow. We are proud to be a leader in providing exceptional care, advanced treatments and improved outcomes to babies and moms.
