Leadership
The Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati is a collaborative effort between Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital and The University Hospital. The leadership team of the center is made up with representation from each partnering medical center:
- Director, Timothy M. Crombleholme, MD, FACS, FAAP, from Children's Hospital Medical Center
- Associate Director, Jeffrey Charles Livingston, MD, from The University Hospital
- Associate Director, William James Polzin, MD, from Good Samaritan Hospital
Timothy Crombleholme, MD, is a recognized leader in the field of fetal surgery and pediatric surgery. He comes to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center from the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (1996 to 2004). Previously he was director of the Fetal Treatment Program at the New England Medical Center in Boston, MA (1993 to 1995).
A graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston (1984), Dr. Crombleholme was a surgical resident and chief resident at the University of California at San Francisco (1984 to 1991), and a chief resident in pediatric surgery at The Floating Hospital for Infants and Children at the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, MA (1991 to 1993). He trained under Michael Harrison, MD, who is widely recognized as the founder of fetal surgery.
In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. Crombleholme is active in clinical and laboratory research. He established the Center for Molecular Fetal Therapy as the basic research laboratory component of the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati.
Dr. Crombleholme's current clinical investigations include a National Institutes of Health funded multicenter trial to determine the best treatment for twin-twin tranfusion syndrome and research on new techniques for open fetal surgery and fetoscopic surgery. His laboratory research includes NIH-funded studies of gene therapy in tissue repair, fetal gene therapy and the role of the fetal fibroblast in fetal wound healing.

Jeffrey Charles Livingston, MD, is a 1987 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College with a degree in biology. He completed his Doctor in Medicine training at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He finished his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at East Carolina University and his fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine from the University of Tennessee at Memphis. Dr. Livingston joined the Fetal Care Center and the University of Cincinnati in 2004 from Roanoke, Virginia where he was the Co-Director of the Perinatal Diagnostic Center at Carillon Health Systems. Dr. Livingston is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in both Obstetrics and Gynecology (1997) and Maternal Fetal Medicine (2005).
Dr. Livingston is currently the interim Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, the Director of Obstetrical Services at University Hospital, the Director of the Perinatal Center at Christ Hospital and the Associate Director of the Fetal Care Center. Dr. Livingston has been recognized at the local and nation level for his teaching of residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Livingston is has published extensively on various topics in pregnancy. His current areas of clinical investigation include hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and the use of sonography in high risk pregnancies.

William Polzin, MD, is well known regionally for his clinical excellence in assisting healthy babies and mothers through high-risk pregnancies. His extensive experience with complicated pregnancies is both reassuring to his many patients and also the foundation for his academic stature.
Dr. Polzin serves as associate director of the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati. He also is director of maternal-fetal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, associate director of obstetrics at Good Samaritan Hospital, and medical director of the community-based prenatal center, Healthy Beginnings.
Dr. Polzin joined Good Samaritan Hospital in 1993. He has been affiliated with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine since 1993. He also practiced obstetrics and gynecology from 1987-93 at various military locations, including assistant chief of maternal-fetal medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, fellow in maternal-fetal medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, and staff physician at USA MEDDAC at Wuerzburg, Germany.
A graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Polzin completed his residency and fellowships at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. He has been a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1989, and a diplomate in the ABOG's division of maternal-fetal medicine since 1995. In 2003, he received the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award, a national award for his leadership in obstetrics and gynecology.
