Fetal Diagnostics
Fetal Diagnostic MRI / Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a newer technique which provides improved detail of the developing fetus without the use of radiation.
This fast imaging, which is obtained with a magnetic and radiofrequency waves, freezes fetal motion and provides excellent soft tissue detail, especially of the fetal brain.

Although ultrasound remains the prime modality for imaging in pregnancy, sometimes the ultrasound is not able to render enough information.
In this situation, fetal MRI can be extremely helpful in delineating the precise diagnosis or the severity of an abnormality.
All patients that are referred for a fetal MRI are sent, therefore, to investigate an abnormality noted on a prenatal ultrasound.
Fetal MRI has been performed for more than 20 years, and there are no known risks to the fetus from the strong magnetic fields.
However, because the fetal cells are more susceptible to damage in the first trimester, MRI is only performed in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
The procedure does not require the injection of sedation medication or dye. The imaging requires 30 to 60 minutes, during which time the mother can sleep, listen to music, or watch a movie with video goggles. The exam can be stopped at any time at the request of the patient.
With the additional information provided by fetal MRI, improved counseling of the family is provided through The Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati. This counseling offers better understanding of the fetal abnormality. With this information, the family can be prepared emotionally, and informed decisions are possible regarding the prenatal and postnatal care of the developing fetus.
