Fetal Surgery Unit
The Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati opened a fetal surgery unit on February 17, 2006. This was the first unit of its kind in the world, according to Timothy Crombleholme, MD, director of the center.
The Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati is a collaborative program that brings together experts from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, The University Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in the care of high-risk pregnancies.
This Fetal Surgery Unit is the only comprehensive center for fetal evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the Midwest.
Prior to the establishment of the Fetal Surgery Unit, fetal surgery was performed in an operating room, which was specifically designed and equipped for open fetal surgery, fetoscopic surgery and ex-utero intrapartum treatment / EXIT procedures at Cincinnati Children's.
The new fetal surgery unit complements other unique aspects of the Fetal Care Center and expands services for patients.
Housed in Location A-7 South of Cincinnati Children's, the unit includes inpatient and outpatient facilities. Two state-of-the-art critical care / high-risk rooms are designed for women admitted after fetoscopic surgery, open fetal surgery or an EXIT procedure.
The unit also includes an ultrasound suite, exam room, consultation rooms, two "nesting" rooms (where the patient and family can rest) and conference facilities.
In addition, a unique hybrid cardiac catheterization lab, to be located in a suite on A-6 Central, is now being planned for the standard cardiac catheterization, combined open heart / catheter procedures and fetal cardiac interventions.
