Bio

Presently – We are conducting extensive translational studies toward developing and applying clinically applicable protocols for maternal-fetal cardiac intervention and surgery. We are also studying the potential utility of natriuretic peptides as biomarkers of fetal cardiovascular well-being and as a candidate selection marker for fetal cardiac intervention. The research in our laboratory is conducted in a multidisciplinary fashion with close collaboration with Dr. Kenneth Clark at University of Cincinnati, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Simultaneous with our maternal-fetal cardiac surgery studies, we have developed and continue to study ovine fetal models of various congenital heart diseases to better understand the physiology and mechanisms underlying in utero evolution of these lesions. Our laboratory has placed a particular emphasis on fetal aortic stenosis and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) as the primary lesions of interest. Along those lines we are simultaneously conducting clinical and epidemiologic studies to better understand potential etiologic mechanisms in these diseases. Most recently, our laboratory has been focusing on a novel hypothesis implicating the potential role of maternal strep exposure in pathogenesis of HLHS (i.e. a form of rheumatic heart disease in the fetus). Concomitant with the preceding basic and translation research, we are also involved with several clinical research projects, including in a multi-institutional NIH sponsored U01 project conducted by the Pediatric Heart Network, studying the optimal surgical therapy for newborns affected by HLHS.

Research

Dr. Eghtesady's Laboratory is actively involved in developing and studying animal models of congenital heart disease, to better understand the mechanisms underlying in utero evolution of these lesions. Further, we are using these models to develop techniques for fetal cardiac surgery/intervention.
